Among our new Bergen Market products is this: wild Okanagan sockeye salmon, sustainably produced by the Okanagan Nation Alliance and sold in Bergen by SweetMeadow Farmstead Cheese.
Ocean-going sockeye were a native species in the Okanagan for thousands of years, and have now been reintroduced into the valley’s lakes by the 8 members of the Okanagan Nation Alliance. Over the past 15 years, the ONA has worked to bring back Okanagan sockeye to Osoyoos, Skaha and Okanagan lakes. This sustainable fishery is now producing fresh sockeye for local restaurants, and canned and smoked sockeye for select markets such as ours.
